CONDITIONS TREATED

Acupuncture for Skin Conditions — Eczema & Psoriasis

Skin conditions are among the most visible and persistent complaints people live with — and among the most undertreated by approaches that focus only on the skin itself. Eczema and psoriasis are systemic conditions that manifest on the surface. Treating the skin alone rarely resolves them. Acupuncture works from the inside out, addressing the internal patterns that drive inflammation, reactivity, and the cycle of flare and remission.

What skin conditions are treated?

  • Eczema and atopic dermatitis

  • Psoriasis

  • Chronic itching and skin sensitivity

  • Stress-related skin flares

  • Rosacea

  • Acne (hormonal and inflammatory)

  • Urticaria and allergic skin reactions

  • Dry, inflamed, or reactive skin alongside digestive complaints

A Chinese medicine perspective

In Chinese medicine, the skin is governed by the Lung system, which controls the body's surface and its relationship with the external environment. When Lung function is compromised — through Heat, Dryness, or deficiency — the skin loses its ability to regulate moisture, temperature, and its defensive barrier. This is one reason respiratory and skin conditions frequently coexist, and why treating the Lung is central to many dermatological presentations.

Wind is the pathogenic factor most associated with itching. In TCM, itching that moves, changes location, or flares unpredictably is characteristic of Wind — either external Wind entering a compromised surface, or internal Wind generated by Blood deficiency or Heat. Dispersing Wind is a central therapeutic aim in most itching presentations.

Heat in the Blood is the dominant pattern in active, red, inflamed skin conditions — the kind of eczema or psoriasis that presents with bright red lesions, intense itching, and worsening with warmth. This pattern is often driven by emotional stress, dietary factors, or constitutional tendency, and requires clearing Heat and cooling Blood alongside supporting the Lung and skin surface.

Dampness is central where skin conditions are weeping, crusting, or accompanied by digestive weakness. The Spleen governs fluid metabolism, and when it is compromised, Dampness accumulates and finds its way to the surface. Eczema in the skin folds, behind the knees, or in the elbow creases often has a strong Damp component alongside Heat.

Blood deficiency is the primary pattern in chronic, dry, thickened, or scaling skin — the kind of eczema or psoriasis that has been present for years and has lost its acute inflammatory quality. When Blood is insufficient, the skin is not nourished, becomes dry and rough, and itches with a duller, more persistent quality. This pattern requires nourishing Blood over time rather than clearing Heat.

Kidney deficiency is relevant in longstanding or constitutionally rooted skin conditions — particularly where there is a strong hereditary component, where the condition has been present since childhood, or where it coexists with other signs of deep depletion.

Balance Method acupuncture for skin conditions

In Balance Method acupuncture, skin conditions are approached through channel theory rather than organ diagnosis. The Lung channel is primary — in Chinese medicine, the Lung diffuses fluids to the skin and actively nourishes the surface of the body. Most skin problems therefore have a Lung channel component at their root.

The Large Intestine channel is closely connected to the Lung as its paired channel, and its involvement in skin conditions extends beyond the physical. Whether it is food that is not being digested properly, or emotions and mental impressions that are not being processed and released, unresolved material in the Large Intestine channel will affect the Lung and therefore the skin. These two channels — Lung and Large Intestine, forming the Tai Yin and Yang Ming pair — are the foundation of most skin treatments.

Where Heat is present, additional channels are brought in to reduce it. The Liver, Gallbladder, Heart, and Small Intestine channels all have a role in clearing Heat from the system, and depending on the presentation and the location of the skin condition, one or more of these will be incorporated into the treatment through their corresponding balancing points.

Point selection is guided by the channel territories involved — the location of the skin condition on the body maps to specific channel pathways, and treatment is directed accordingly through distal points on the arms, hands, legs, and feet.

How acupuncture helps

Acupuncture addresses skin conditions by regulating immune reactivity, reducing systemic inflammation, improving circulation to the skin, and calming the nervous system response that drives stress-related flares. The gut-skin axis is well established, and where digestive complaints coexist with skin conditions — as they frequently do — treating both together produces better outcomes than treating the skin alone.

For eczema, acupuncture reduces the intensity and frequency of flares, alleviates itching, and over a sustained course of treatment shifts the underlying pattern that generates reactivity. Results are gradual but cumulative.

For psoriasis, acupuncture is used as a supportive treatment alongside any existing medical management. It can reduce the inflammatory activity driving plaque formation, improve skin barrier function, and address the stress component that reliably triggers flares in most people with psoriasis.

Herbal supplements are frequently recommended alongside acupuncture for skin conditions — particularly for Heat clearance and internal nourishment — as the internal treatment between sessions supports and accelerates the work done in the clinic.

What to expect

The first session includes a detailed intake covering the history and location of the skin condition, triggers, aggravating and relieving factors, digestive health, stress, sleep, and relevant health background. Pulse and tongue assessment are central — the tongue coating and colour in particular reflect the presence of Heat, Dampness, and Blood deficiency clearly.

Skin conditions typically require a longer course of treatment than acute complaints. Initial improvement in itching and inflammation is often noticeable within four to six sessions. Meaningful change in the underlying pattern usually requires ten to twelve sessions or more, with frequency reducing as the condition stabilises.

Frequently asked questions

Can acupuncture help if I have had eczema or psoriasis since childhood? Yes, though longstanding constitutional conditions require a sustained course of treatment. The underlying pattern is deeper and more established, but meaningful improvement in symptom burden and quality of life is achievable.

Does diet affect skin conditions in Chinese medicine? Yes, significantly. Spicy food, alcohol, dairy, and sugar are common aggravants for Heat and Damp patterns. Dietary guidance is always discussed as part of the consultation and tailored to the individual presentation.

Can acupuncture be used alongside steroid creams or biologic treatments? Yes. Acupuncture is compatible with conventional dermatological treatment and does not interfere with it. Many people use acupuncture to reduce reliance on topical steroids over time, always in coordination with their dermatologist.

Is stress really a trigger for skin conditions? Yes — consistently so. The relationship between the nervous system, immune reactivity, and skin inflammation is well established. Addressing the stress component through acupuncture directly reduces the frequency and severity of stress-triggered flares.

Do I need a referral from my GP? No. Acupuncture can be booked directly in the Netherlands without a referral. Costs may be partially reimbursed through supplementary health insurance (aanvullende verzekering).
